With this website Bertina Schulze-Mittendorff would like to make the life and works of her father Walter Schulze-Mittendorff, the sculptor and artist who was deeply involved in film work, accessible to a larger interested public. You will find excerpts from the artist‘s biography; his vita, his œuvre, and its meaning are placed in a historical context here.
This applies especially in regard to cinema history, with a deepening view taken at selected films by director Fritz Lang – Walter Schulze-Mittendorff produced the sculptures for these films as a freelance artist. Special mention must be made of Metropolis and its figurehead, the Machine Man (The Metropolis Robot). In 2001, Metropolis was the first film to be included in UNESCO's World Heritage list, and with it, of course, all artworks the film contains. With the Machine Man Walter Schulze-Mittendorff has created a piece of art that's become famous all over the world.
For the first time you are shown a comprehensive overview of the artist's multifaceted work, including many illustrations; some of them have never been published before. This unique collection of documents, photographs, sculptures, drawings, and costume designs from the legacy of Walter Schulze-Mittendorff is complemented with comments and essays from his daughter Bertina.
The deeper the artist devotes himself to the moment of creation, the less he makes it ’his’ work but dedicates it to the freedom that is inherent to it, because through freedom it came into being. Herein lies the true nature of art – to be a gift to the world.
